This dude [info]hughferriss is headed for big things. If his hands don't cramp up. This guy just gets it. Plus I can see his stuff appealing to everyone. From the old school people like me to the manga kids. Stylewise I know where he is coming from but he takes his influences and makes them his own. The only thing that I can say that I don't like is that I can't buy any of these pages because they are all done in photoshop. Check out his art blog.

More of Jim Mooney's art.

So I found another page of his that is just a text book lesson on how to draw comics. Is it the most dazzing page ever? No, but what it is , is full of lessons on how to move the eye thru a page with placement of black and again lush brush work. Its a bit funny and sad that the Rob Liefields replaced artists like this. I understand why they did, because frankly they were more exciting and that is what the comic readers wanted. Hell that is what I wanted. While I could enjoy reading a comic like this, I'd want something that kicked ass like Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man. (Even back then Liefields stuff seemed like it was pretty hollow and just bad. But McFarlane had a new take on Spider Man that was just so cool and made stuff like this really dated. Having said all of that I do see so many artists out there that would be better for having studied work like Mooneys inbetween looking at Anime and badly drawn webcomics.

Although this page has a few weird spots, it still looks like a pro drew it. Mooney knew what to fake and what he had to really focus on. Also look at the brush work, although not as great as the last example I posted its still worth studing. The thing that I really liked again with the use of blacks to lead the eye. Its a subtlier use than Mike Mignola, Jae Lee, Eduardo Rizzo or Lee Bermejo but I'd say that maybe its more effective because of this. Its not so in your face, but rather quietly there helping tell the story.

Having said all that I like a few of the other artist more that I like Jim Mooney.

This is how you do it # 529

This is some really awesome old school comicbook art. Just looking at it is a lesson in how to draw. Although it isn't all " cool and modern looking" a.k.a it doesn't look like Manga it's something that I think every artist should take a good look at.

Look at the lettering...look at how much life and energy it has....notice how it was done by hand. Look at the rendering on Spider-Man..again done with a brush ( at least the outlining and most if the feathering on the body) its totally full of grace and energy. Although the assembly line production of superhero books has its faults it tends to produce amazing inkers. You can tell that this inker can actually draw as well as just being able to get a slick line out of a brush.

And last but not least the way that the blacks not only balance the compsition, but they draw your eye to the characters.

A master class, if I do say so myself.

[info]fenmere Authority on all dragon like things is offering dragon drawings for ten bucks a pop. Only ten damn dollars! That is pretty damn inexpensive I'd say. So if you have any interest in giving one of his drawings a home go check it out over here.

Hmm,....

This webcomic looks great. And I don't mean by webcomic standards...I just mean by general cartooning standards. However I can't read it. But it sure is pretty to look at.

Check out Dresden Codak. You eyes will thank you for the feast of pretty colors.

One of my LJ friends [info]hughferriss has a new art blog here. The first two pages of his comic are fuckin' sick. It makes me want to go back to the drawing board. He is teaching motherfuckers how to draw, I already thought that he was a great artist but now he stepped up to grand master status. So what are you doing reading this??? Go check it out!

Finally....

If anyone wonders why I try to put that extra effort into my art....Its because of artists like Gabriel Rodriguez That dude never has a bad day! Sure he isn't prefect, but he is pretty damn close! His stuff reminds me of Travis Charest, Rick Geary and J.Scott Campbell with a touch of Joe Madureira thrown in.

Thanks to [info]parachles for leading me to the great Franz Von Stuck

He is really amazing, And sadly pretty much unknown. ti sucks that so few artists are pushed into the spotlight. In my opinion a lot of them are overrated. But I won't name names...Anyway here is one of his paintings. Enjoy.
